 has developed its second medical student education program, an internship for future physicians. The Lilly Medical Student Intern Program, the second phase of its medical student programs, offers opportunities for medical students between their first and second years to work alongside healthcare professionals in the pharmaceutical industry to gain knowledge and experience in several areas, including preclinical research, clinical trial development, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, bio-ethics, and patient safety.

Six students from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine will be the first to participate in the intern program at Lilly’s Indianapolis headquarters. Students will expand their knowledge of the industry by spending time at other facilities, including Covance and Elanco, and participating in team-building activities with other summer interns across the company.

This is the second medical student program launched by Lilly this year. In February, Lilly announced a new partnership with Tulane University School of Medicine to launch the Medical Student Rotation Program, a four-week program for fourth-year medical students. The 10-week Lilly Medical Student Intern Program will run from May through August.

, in partnership with photographer Anne Geddes, the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations (CoMO), and charities around the world, have published an eBook featuring inspirational images of meningococcal disease survivors from around the world who have participated in the Protecting Our Tomorrows: Portraits of Meningococcal Disease campaign. This project aims to raise public awareness of meningococcal disease and the importance of vaccination. The eBook is available to download on iBooks.
  
  "Through a series of what I believe are inspirational photographs of meningococcal disease survivors and families impacted by the disease, this project celebrates the survivors' triumphs and honors those who've tragically lost their lives," said Geddes. "Over my 30-year career, there is not one parent I have worked with who doesn't love their children, want to nurture their children and protect their children. Through these images, I hope parents feel empowered to understand the disease's impact and know the options available to them."
  
  The eBook is the culmination of a worldwide project launched in 2013, aiming to raise awareness of  meningococcal disease. Geddes meet with the 15 project participants from eight countries (Australia, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Spain, UK, and US) to depict their resilience through their portraits. As global project ambassador, Geddes has also worked to promote awareness and encourage meningococcal disease education through meetings with journalists, patient advocacy organizations, and public officials.

A software upgrade for the Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyzer from Malvern Instruments decreases the analytical workload associated with developing and validating particle sizing methods. New operational features, such as an Optical Property Optimizer (OPO ), simplify the process of method development. The new OPO tool enables the identification of appropriate refractive index and absorption values for the analysis of any given sample. It also allows analysts to research the impact of optical properties on reported particle size, in real time, using an intuitive point-and-click tool. According to the company, this helps exploration of the operating space in which robust measurements are assured, to define the method operable design region for a particle size analysis method.

Laser Diffraction Software Supports Analytical QbD

 will take over the development of Fibrotech’s product FT011, which has completed a Phase 1A study in healthy volunteers and is currently in a Phase 1B study in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Subject to successful completion of this trial, the first Phase 2 study is expected to be initiated to enroll focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) patients next year. In addition to FT011, Shire has acquired Fibrotech’s library of molecules including FT061, in pre-clinical development that is similar to FT011. It is an oral small molecule that could address both the inflammatory and pro-fibrotic components of fibrosis.
  
  The closing of the acquisition is subject to customary conditions, including approval of Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board.

 and Samsung BioLogics have expanded their existing manufacturing agreement, in which Samsung will manufacture commercial drug substances and drug product for several Bristol-Myers Squibb biologic medicines at Samsung's Incheon, China manufacturing site. Financial terms of the agreement are not disclosed.

, a division of Gregory Pharmaceutical Holdings, has reached an agreement with Amerigen Pharmaceuticals, to commercially manufacture two ANDA products for a 10-year supply term.  In addition, the agreement allows for UPM to develop and potentially commercially supply several additional ANDA products for Amerigen over the next few years.  UPM acquired a 475,000 ft2 Pfizer manufacturing facility in Bristol, Tennessee in July of 2013, that will supply these products.

UPM will commercially manufacture two ANDA products for Amerigen Pharmaceuticals.
