As pharma companies face increasing regulatory scrutiny and risk of product recalls due to N-nitrosamine formation in drug products, the mechanism of reaction and root cause of formation is not always understood, which can make risk mitigation difficult. Current mitigation strategies tend to focus on changes to formulations, sourced materials, or manufacturing processes, which can be costly. Additionally, controlling the variables associated with N-nitrosamine formation is not always certain. Additional or alternative mitigation strategies need to be considered to fully address risk. After earning a doctor of philosophy degree in material chemistry from the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France, Jean Daou, PhD, joined the Université de Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse, France, as assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2016. His research activities focus on the synthesis of porous materials, the study of their properties and their shaping to meet pharmaceutical packaging demands for molecular decontamination. He is the author of 137 publications in international journals and holds 18 patents.
